AI and Precision Health
This module provides an overview of the key components of precision health, the role of AI and machine learning in delivering it, and the benefits and current challenges of using AI for precision health.
Problem
This module presented a dual challenge. First, artificial intelligence is abstract and highly technical. Second, the audience was medical students, who are still acquiring the fundamentals of clinical care; precision medicine was unfamiliar ground layered on an unfamiliar discipline. The module had to make the workings of AI precision tools approachable while also supporting students in placing them within a clinical context that is itself still new to them.
Approach
I provided learning design oversight for the vendor build. My central proposal was patient profiles modeled on EHR records: each presents a realistic patient with a genetic condition or rare disease, enough clinical detail to understand it, and the precision-health treatment the AI tool supports, so students connect the condition to individually tailored care. For the examples, I insisted on tabs in place of a lengthy animated slide, unlocked so learners could explore the supplementary content or move forward.
Result
Selected for inclusion in the UCEP, GCEP, and PEP curriculum packages. In survey responses, learners consistently cited the patient profiles as especially useful, noting that they demonstrated how these tools can be incorporated into patient care, and that they appreciated the slider format.
